A high school student got his own apartment and when he got his key he excitedly and happily rushed inside. This is not a typical scene like on other anime where the guy entered to his room and there’s already someone there, awkward and fanservice stuff happens. When Yama Juugo entered to his living room a girl named Ryuugajou Nanana, eating a pudding as she gives Yama a smile. But wait, that’s cute girl is murdered ten years ago, so it’s jus a ghost, a real deal. Not a typical ghost with some scary and creepy faces that comes with thrilling sound effects for every screen time. This one is a pudding eater and gamer note that she dislike those 3 for 98 yen puddings, also an internet junkie but don’t worry she comes with a manual on how to deal with her. Asking her how she die, she gives a smile telling she stabbed from behind and she didn’t know who it was. To be honest I suspected every character of who might had murdered her. So I think by that you got curious to why she hasn’t move on, it’s because she says she still enjoy playing online games, playing all day all night as a ghost. But having one room, a kitchen and bathroom. Furniture, appliances and extras, and by extra you can have a girl act as your girlfriend if you win in a fight. But our main character didn’t win sadly. But hey not bad for 5,000 yen per month. Note it also comes with PS3 and a gaming PC also a walking distance on a convenience store.
They already put opening theme and ending theme on the very first episode. It has actually nothing to show much, but it covers all the major characters doing some stuff. I guess most viewers skipping those parts, but should not on ending because there is some short scenes after the ending theme. The setting of the show is on fictional man made island and buildings are modern, not in a normal modern way but more futuristic, some building is 164 floors that’s how tall it is. But still Yama got a normal apartment, a room accurate in real life. The Nanae Island is a man made island for young people to chase their dreams. Don’t expect normal dreams like a student want’s to be an author or an artist. You’ll get something like world domination and island ruling. My first impression on the main character, Yama, is he looks like a delinquent but nice deep inside, always getting judged by others, something like that. But no, what I got is an open proudly pervert student who always hit on random girls, doesn’t matter to him even he hurts himself physically or dislocate his right shoulder. Expect fanservice often, they appear on the very first episode as Yama interacts with already two potential girls that shows an interest to him, the number will increase as the story progress, to be adding to his multi romance. My first impression on the first episode is, I already knew that Nanana the ghost girl will be the best girl throughout the series followed by the tsundere master detective, Tensai. Also on the first episode you’ll get some phantom thieves in actions, just like on Persona video games. This anime is very fiction so expect lots logic defying scenes. About the animation I got really impressed this anime is really budgeted and funded, the colors is amazing their eyes is vibrant. Overall the animation is high quality.
The cast is complete, has similarity to other anime, in other words, the cast is pretty common nothing special except for Nanana. You’ll get a pervert guy, eye glass girl and maid, gender bender or trap and so on. I just don’t like that they introduced new character late in the show. Seems like the late part of anime is rushed and drag.
This is quite similar to Uncharted video games with a girl version of Nathan. Some puzzles need to complete to get the treasure, and those puzzles is not normal where you need to find a key, unlocked a chest and done, but it’s not simple as that. Early episode shows a normal school room with just a randoseru. Crazy things happen, tables and chairs moved on their own and form a way to a chest at the end. One wrong set foot on a table, you’ll get dropped in pitch black hole. I liked how they use CGI, actually they know how to used CGI very well.
As for the brands in this show. A PS3 is not noticeable at first because they put a really weird logo on it, but the disc tray confirms it’s a Super Slim PS3 model. There’s also a famicom and a cool expensive looking system unit case. Some games Nanana playing is Phantasy Star Online, Terraria, Tekken, some dating sim/ visual novel. That’s it, Nanana best girl.
But the thing is our main character seems to be broke. So he’ll be finding a part time so he can cover for the utility bill. Imagine the cost of a girl playing 24 hour a day on his apartment. Anyway, he ended up as a delivery boy for a shady group.
Like any other anime, there be always plot twists. But as a mystery anime, I’m sure most people already tried to predict some scene before it happened. This show usually shows a hint. But major plot twist happens at random time, it can happen consecutively.
The interesting part started when an antagonist reveals his goal and ambition. It is to rule the man made island and world domination. He used a magic staff that blows some magic, this show already has a ghost so it’s not surprising to see any magic from role playing games such as fire and ice. Speaking of games, I think this anime is better to have a game, an adventure type and not some visual novel. I also get some Doraemon, Detective Conan, Indiana Jones vibes because of those gadgets, adventure, magic stuff, hey those gadgets area really good I haven’t seen them on other shows. About the pacing, there are some times that is rush and fast. I also do not like of how fast two characters solved a conflict. I mean they almost killed each other and then in such an hour they’re okay like something didn’t happen.
About the character designs, no doubt that characters are well draw. They’re perfect. A plus for Tensai and Nanana outfit. But there are some instance that is a bit off like they are still wearing their school uniform on their hot spring sleep over.
There are some memorable scene, aside from every single time Tensai laughing like she’s over the moon and Nanana eating different pudding. One is when Yukihime is blushing and speaking intermittently, I like that cute side of her.
Final verdict. Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin or Nanana’s Buried Treasure is a really good adventure anime and has a good ending, hoping for next season. About Nanana, I’m sure your going to love her at the same time you will feel sad for her. It’s also a good entry anime for those people who just started watching anime.
